Welcome to the Club 2019 Tournament page
I am sure that all participants and spectators would like to join me in thanking Carl for organising the Tournament again this year.
In addition to all the preparation, Carl manages the whole event single handed from the planning stage in March, through the Tournament rounds April to June, plus the finals weekend.
With matches being played from 9.00am through to early evening on the Saturday and on the Sunday from 9.00am, this is a huge commitment.
I am pleased to say that Carl was able to compete as well and during these times Alison and Jennifer gave their support to keep the event moving.
My thanks also goes to Mike Stenton who stepped in to present the trophies as I was not able to be at the event this year.
This year saw a record number of applicants for the Annual Tournament and it was great to see new names and faces enjoying some competitive but fun tennis throughout the 11-weeks of competition.
The matches were played in great spirit and there were numerous highly competitive but friendly matches during the rounds leading up to the finals weekend.
We finally arrived at the annual club adult’s tournament finals, which took place on Saturday the 27th & Sunday 28th June
We could not have picked a hotter day with temperatures set to reach 30 degrees plus, so we pulled the start time forward as much as possible with the intention to get as many matches away as early as possible and avoid the hottest part of the day. We had a day of glorious sunshine, which whilst better that a wet windy day was a little too hot if we were in a position to be able to choose the weather conditions.
That didn’t deter the spectators as clearly watching tennis on a sunny English summer’s day under the shade of an umbrella is glorious and a little easier than having to play in it.
The adult’s finals started at 9.00 with the final matches kicking off around 15:00, the day was well attended throughout by players, club members and spectators alike who were treated to some excellent tennis of a high standard. The day was basked in glorious sunshine with temperatures albeit a little too hot at times. Added to this we had a couple of matches that took nearly 4 hours to complete due to the fact that the levels were so finally matched and each set led to a tie break, in fact we probably had more tie breaks than in any previous finals day which just goes to show how close that matches were and the competitive nature of the play. Because of this we even rescheduled the ladies singles to Sunday morning to avoid the worst heat of the day, given that both finalists had already spent considerable time out on court and again there was great support at the club for them on Sunday morning. I have to say that the matches were played out in a great spirit throughout with a high level of camaraderie as ever.
As always congratulations must go to all the participants that reached the finals and who took part, putting on an enjoyable display of quality tennis throughout the days event.
Equally congratulations must go to our winners whose names will be added to the clubhouse boards and will receive their trophies in due course once the engraver has finished adding their names to the trophies, they were:
Mens Singles – Tom Messenger
Ladies Singles – Camilla Croxton
Mens Doubles – Chris Palmer & John Palmer

Mixed Doubles – Matt Tomes & Emma Tomes
Vets Mens Singles – Kieran Daly

Finally thank you to the members and supporters who added to the enjoyment of the day’s events and we look forward to welcoming you all again next year.
This will take place on Saturday 15th September to coincide with the Mr & Mrs Tournament and the Stenton Singles Competition
Finally, a thank you to our Chairman Peter Messenger for his continued support over the course of the tournament, Jennifer and Alison on finals day and Mike Stenton for presenting the trophies
