The Mac McCallum Tournament

2019 Event

The Annual Mac McCallum Tournament took place on Saturday 27th April. This tournament marks the change from the winter tennis season to the summer tennis season and it is held in memory of Mac McCallum, a past Chairman and Bucks County Committee Member.

After a beautiful bank holiday weekend, the weather turned against us with a storm blowing in from the Atlantic accompanied by some strong winds. At one stage late in the week before the event it looked like we may need to postpone the tournament but at the last minute the weather turned in our favour and we took the decision to play. It was the right decision and although very windy at times making play interesting, we stayed dry for the afternoon apart from the odd few very short and very light sprinkles of rain and we were even privileged with the sun which decided to grace us with its presence for a few odd minutes.

The standard format for this event is a mixed tournament with players seeded and then pairings made up of a mixture of men’s, ladies and mixed doubles targeted to create a level playing field for all. This allows players of all abilities to participate and get the most from the day.  The matches, all doubles, were timed 15-minute rounds with 10 rounds in total, each individual taking part in 7 or 8 of the 10 rounds.  Games won by each player are totalled up over the course of the afternoon and the average games won per match played calculated, to be able to rank all players at the end.  Given the challenges of the wind there was some very competitive and enjoyable tennis played and both the format and seedings worked well, with lots of close matches and a very close final result.

Once the final results were in and totalled up the highest scoring man and lady were announced who made up the joint champions for the event.

The day was extremely well supported with over 20 participants in the event and a good gallery of spectators who also supplied some wonderful homemade cake for the buffet table. We were also joined by Kath McCallum who along with the gallery was treated to some excellent tennis played in a competitive but extremely good humoured atmosphere. The gallery below has some great images from the day.

There were some very strong scores at the end of the competition, with the eventual winners being David Wilson and Jennifer Thomas as the top scoring individual man and lady, congratulations to them both.

Thank you also to all the participants of the days event and for making it such an enjoyable Tournament.

Following on from a full afternoon of competition the players and spectators relaxed over a tennis tea whilst watching with interest the annual Wimbledon ballot which has been managed by the Chairman Mr Peter Messenger, ably assisted by Carl Murray and Ryan Thomas who operated the lottery style ball machine to determine the lucky winners. Thanks also goes to David Wilson for the preparation and experience he put into this year’s draw. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all members who supported the club through the ballot as their support over the past few years in registering as BTM members, linking their membership to Horsenden Tennis Club and opting in annually has assisted in ensuring the maximum number members can benefit from the experience of attending the championships at Wimbledon this year.

The committee would like to express their thanks to Carl who organised the tournament single handed and to all who assisted in the management of the Wimbledon ballot process.

2018 Event

The Annual Mac McCallum Tournament took place on Saturday 21st April . We hold the tournament in memory of Mac McCallum and it signifies the change from winter to summer Tennis Season.  We had a beautiful spring day marking the end of what has been a long winter season and welcoming the much-needed start of the summer season, which we did in style with wall to wall sunshine for most of the day and only a light welcome shower helping to take the heat out of the day, cooling matters down a little in afternoon.

The format for the day is a mixed tournament with players seeded and pairings targeted to create a level playing field for all. This allows players of all abilities to participate and get the most from the day.  The matches, all doubles, were timed 15-minute rounds with 8 rounds in total, each individual taking part in 7 of the 8 rounds.  Games won by each player are totalled up over the course of the afternoon and the average games per round played calculated, to be able to rank all players at the end.  Our format and seedings worked well, with lots of close matches and a very close final result.

Once the final results are totalled up the highest scoring man and lady make up the joint champions

The day was very well supported from both players and a good gallery of spectators including Kath McCallum who were all treated to some excellent tennis played in a competitive but extremely good humoured atmosphere. The gallery below has some great images from the day.

There was some very even scoring at the end of the competition, with the eventual winners being James Scully and Jenny King as the top scoring individual man and lady, congratulations to them both.

Thank you also to all the participants of the days event and for making it such an enjoyable Tournament.

Following on from a full afternoon of competition the players and spectators relaxed over a tennis tea whilst watching with interest the annual Wimbledon ballot which has been managed by David Wilson. Chairman Mr Peter Messenger, ably assisted by Carl Murray operated the lottery style ball machine to determine the lucky winners. Congratulations to the winners, and thanks to all members who supported the club through the ballot.  It is worth noting that this year’s allocation of Wimbledon tickets was the highest obtained by the club, so thanks must go to the members for their assistance and David our secretary for his efforts in getting as many members as possible to register, as this enabled more members to benefit from the experience of attending the championships at Wimbledon this year.

The committee would like to express their thanks to Carl who organised the tournament single handed whilst managing to participate and to David who managed the Wimbledon ballot process.
