On Sunday 28th our U18 boys played their first Team Tennis Buckinghamshire league match of the 2019 summer season.
It was a tightly fought but enjoyable match against Gerrards Cross - Dukes Wood, the format is 3 rubbers with 2 singles rubbers played first followed by a doubles rubber (rubbers being the best of 2 sets each). The first 2 singles rubbers were halved 1 each, meaning it all came down to the doubles rubber. The first set swung both ways with our team finally taking the set 7-5, the second set was even closer going to a tie break at 6 sets all, with our team eventually winning it 7-6 with the tie break going to 7-5.
Well done to James Murray and Tom Hawkins, a great way to start the campaign
Ladies Doubles (Div 5) : the team have stayed up in 5th place after an important victory over Halton in their last match with a strong Horsenden team gaining an emphatic 7.5 - 0.5 win.
Well done to Sue in 7th, Gail 8th and Carol 13th in the Player Standings and to Brigid for captaining the team.
Mixed Doubles 1 (Div 3) : the team finished in 5th place with a strong performance in the last 2 matches, beating 2nd placed Aston Park and 6th placed Bierton to secure safety in the Division. Thanks go to all who played and it was great to have Camilla Croxton, Tony Shadbolt and Matt Tomes playing in the latter stages to help us oldies !
Yours truly was 8th and Sue was 9th in the Player Standings.
Mixed Doubles 2 (Div 5) : the team kept up their performance from the first half of the season, securing promotion in 2nd place behind Aylesbury and holding off the challenge from Bierton in 3rd place. A great effort and very well done - onwards and upwards to Div 4 ! Well done to Gail in 4th and for her captaincy of the team, and Jon M in 10th in the Player Standings - and all the best to Jon for a speedy recovery after his foot op.
Mens Doubles 1 (Div 3) : the team got into trouble half way through the season and were in last place, but then rose like a phoenix from the ashes to grab 3rd place after winning 3 and drawing 2 of the last 5 matches. We were the only team to beat top placed Tring and managed a draw v 2nd placed Chesham Bois. Yours truly was 5th, Chris M and Dan 13th and 14th placed. Thanks go to all who played and was great to have John Palmer step in to help us beat Linslade late on.
Mens Doubles 2 (Div 6) : the Hellboys took the Division by storm, equaling Great Missenden on points but behind on Sets to finish in 2nd place, thereby gaining promotion to Div 5. A key match Away v the Wingrave Warriors in April saw a great performance from the team with Chris P and Tom M winning all 4 sets and Jon M and Carl securing a 5th set to secure 2nd place and keep Wingrave 3rd. Well done to Chris P in 3rd, Mike in 6th and Jon M in 7th place. And congrats to Clive for rousing his troops to muster 2nd place and a crack at Div 5.
Mens Doubles 3 (Div 8) : the Hellcats finished in 4th place with 3 strong teams above them 7 points clear of us. I expect Clive and the team to have a good shot next Winter. Well done to Jim in 7th and Richard in 8th place.
Bucks Leagues - Veterans
Mens 45 Doubles 1 (Div 6) : the team are currently in 4th place with 1 match to go v Beaconsfield which would see them go 3rd if they either draw or win. Great Missenden, Chesham Bois and Beaconsfield in the top 3 spots are strong teams and we narrowly lost to Chesham Bois early on in the season which cost us a crack at the top 2. Captain Ryan and the team will be gunning for promotion next Winter. Yours truly was 3rd, Ryan 5th, Carl 8th and John P 10th.
Mens 45 Doubles 2 (Div 8) : the team finished 2nd from bottom out of 5 teams. As pointed out at the half way stage, the bottom Division can be tough to get out of due to the entry of new teams with strong players - this proved to be the case with 2 strong Milton Keynes teams who took the 2 top spots. Captain Richard and the team will regroup for next year's challenge.
Bucks Winter League - Singles:
Mens Singles (Div 2) : the team, captained by Ryan, finished a very creditable 3rd - 2 points behind Halton who they trounced 3-0 early in the season. Very well done to Chris M in 1st place and Ryan in 4th and I am confident the team will have a real chance of promotion next Winter.
Mens Singles (Div 3) : the team finished 2nd from bottom with 3 strong teams running away from the rest in this bottom Division. When players such as Chris P and (Captain) Mike S playing together get beaten 4 sets to 0 by Marlow - playing against David Barnacle who also plays for Tring in Mens Doubles Div 3 (who won that Div with David top of the Player stats) - you know you're in trouble !
Oxfordshire Babolat League
Ladies Doubles (Div 5) : the team remained in 3rd place , only 5 sets behind 2nd placed Oxford (OHRC) - note that the rankings are based on total Sets won across all matches - we ended up with 40 Sets won compared to Oxford on 45 and Blewbury on 51 Sets,
Well done to Captain Cass for a hard fought campaign and to Alison in an excellent 3rd place along with strong support from Emma, Gail and Sue who were further down the rankings but got a healthy number of Sets for the team. On this showing the team can certainly get promotion next year.
